I see that the Coolness started his own Smash tournament. However, I don't have Skype, and I'm not interested in it at the moment, so I can't join.
So I made this thread. You can discuss the N64 game, Melee, Brawl, and of course, 3DS/Wii U. You can even discuss mods like Project M (an unofficial mod for Brawl) here!
Anyways, I'll start by saying I've been playing Smash since the N64 days. Apparently, I was one of the few who even knew of the previous game when Melee came out. I had fun with both, but an incident at the school playground during my (and Melee's) youth made it so that it'd be years before I was allowed to play any Smash again. I Falcon Punched another kid, in case you wanted to know. Thus why I missed out on Brawl when it first came out, though I enjoyed what little I finally played of that one.
Then the new one came out. And made me a Smash fan once again. Got the 3DS version as a birthday present, and man, I never realized how much I missed playing Smash until I actually played this. It's one of those games that allows for competition as well as fun. The 3DS version is a great game with much replay value and levels. The levels taken from Melee was a nice touch. Smash Run is fun too, though I wish we had gotten a true Adventure mode.
Then, by sheer luck, I got the Wii U version. Let me say, right of the bat, it's a much better game. It has a different set of levels from the 3DSrelease, making it so that 3DS owners can feel validated in owning both versions (I know I do). The level are better and there are even more trophies.
I also like the Special Orders mode, since I can unlock stuff, and it's very fitting for Smash.
Plus, Mewtwo is coming back as DLC for both versions! I can't wait! Especially since I registered both versions on Club Nintendo, so I get him for free! Speaking of characters, I thought I'd main Sonic or Mega Man. Instead, I mained Wario. How he's represented isn't so great, but he's still fun to play as, and not too difficult to handle. I prefer to play in his classic outfit, though what he wears has no effect on gameplay.
However, the games do have their issues. For one, like I said, Wario's representation isn't so great. This applies to Brawl as well, but they made a moveset from the whole cloth, and claimed the Wario Waft was his signature move...despite that it's actually an invention of Smash's. Brawl had a less impressive version of his actual signature move, the Shoulder Bash.
But while it wasn't as impressive, at least it was there. For only Sakurai knows why, the 3DS/Wii U game decided to get rid of that, eliminating his real signature move entirely rather than restoring it to its former glory! I hear Project M, while still not perfect, actually makes Wario more like his Land self, and makes the improvements to his shoulder bash.
Also, Pac-Land is terrible. It looks like it was made in MS Paint, and it's a chore to go through. Even sadder, screenshots of the Pac-Land game reveals that it's an accurate representation of its source material. Sadly, the game's not well known (most never heard of it before Smash), so not even nostalgia saves the aesthetics. Truly a shame.
Another thing I have issue with is Smash Tour, which is in Smash Run's place in the Wii U release. It's like a worse, and more boring version of Mario Party. I'd even go as far as to use the hammer on anything that said "Smash Tour" in the challenges, because after playing it three times, I don't want to go back. Fittingly enough, you have to play all three maps at least once to unlock Pac-Land, which I already said was a bad stage. I recommend doing it in the lowest amount of turns it'll allow.
Still, these are small problems in an otherwise amazing game, and I highly recommend both versions.
What do you think of the series?
